...what were they? The game system itself, not the games.

There were three versions, the Atari 2600, Atari 5800, and Atari 7200.

The 7200 can play games made for the 7200 or the 2600, but not for the 5800. The 2600 system was released in two model designs.

You missed out on the Atari Jaguar and the Atari Lynx (atari's handheld). On top of that Atari got their start with standalone pong type systems. They also had a personal computer lineup with a good gaming focus. I've got an Atari XE with the ligh gun, and Bug Hunt is one of the best 80's lightgun games around...
