Of what the United States received, I'd have to say Chrono Trigger. It had a complex storyline with interesting characters, and the time travel aspect was fun. The music score was good, especially Magus' theme with the wicked laughter. Also, the replay value was high with the addition of multiple endings and the ability to carry your save data over to a new game.
However, Earthbound comes close, but it's hard to place the two games next to each other because of how vastly different they were. Chrono Trigger was dark and serious while Earthbound was light-hearted and quirky, and both were equally enjoyable. I suppose if you put them each into their own category, Chrono Trigger was the best old school, serious RPG and Earthbound was the best old school, light-hearted RPG.
