I don't think the PC brand itself really matters. If you buy based on that, you're just buying for the company's reputation, not the PC or gaming. What's important is the insides of the PC - how much ram, the video card, and so on. Those tend to be made by other companies and be different brands than the PC itself. If you wanted to look at brands, that would be the place to start.

I agree the brand does not matter as how cost effective it is and peformance and also what eilt druin said about the specs of the sed computer.
Although I would build a computer as it is more cost effective to the person because they can pick and choose prices and find deals which pc brands don't really do for the buyer.

Some companies try to get better components for their PC. For other companies, price, not quality, is the bottom line.
I think the company does matter to a certain extent.

Like the others said, a lot of it has to do with the insides. But I usually have Gateways, and they do alright. Until they slow down and die, anyway.

I am thinking about getting a Dell XPS for gaming.
I read the reviews and they were great. Only problem is that the price is a bit high.

Thats why I think it would be smart for you to build you own computer.

I agree with the other posters that the brand doesn't matter. Just check the specs of the PC and find reviews of them on the internet.

There is no real advantage to build your own PC, LOL! It's now cheaper to buy a new one than build your own.

I have been gaming on PC's since I was in 5th grade and the ones that I have had the best luck with are custom HP's. They are not know for gaming at all but I like them the best to game on and have no problems wit them at all to this date.
