You can only do what you want to do with the new PSP (the PSP 2000/lite) which has 'TV out'. With the new PSP you can put whatever is on the PSP screen onto a TV using a wire.

The new PSP launches in september in the USA in three different colours.
Personally I would want to get the limited edition Final Fantasy PSP which comes out in Japan when Crisis core comes out, if I didn't already have a PSP.

You can put the original PSP on the TV, but it can be complicated and void your warranty. One method involves taking it apart and refitting it with a different plate that allows direct access to the PSP's internal chip. Another method involves recording the image on the PSP screen with a bulky, unwieldy camera attachment and then having the image simultaneously transfered onto your TV. Both methods do not reproduce perfect graphics. For more information, you'll have to play with Google. It might take a few different search combinations, but it'll eventually pop up.
